Twilight Landscape with House and Fork

A low farmhouse and a lone pitchfork hold the last of the light in this twilight landscape by Paula Modersohn-Becker, brushed in violet, ash and umber over dark moor ground. Brushwork rides thick across the sky, where greyed rose bleeds into slate blue above a thin strip of copper at the horizon. The house crouches beneath a heavy roof, windows dark. In the foreground the fork plants its tines in turned earth, its shaft one bare upright stroke. It belongs in a study or a north facing hallway, a room where the dusk palette deepens under lamplight instead of fading away by day.
