Tulips

Tulips crowd the foreground, petals pushed wide in thick, loaded color. Samuel Peploe arranged them as a tight bouquet, blooms jostling for space against a spare, pale ground. The petals carry deep vermilion and coral pink, their edges dragged with darker pigment so each cup reads almost sculptural. Stems bend at odd angles, green strokes laid in fast and wet. Behind the flowers a flat block of muted blue holds the composition level, the kind of plain wall Peploe liked as a stage. Light falls from the left, catching the rim of the blooms. Suits a dining room or a bright kitchen wall where color can carry the space.
