Tulips

Tulips lean every which way from a squat jug, red heads tipping left, white ones nodding right, and Samuel Peploe lays each flower down in a single loaded stroke. The paint sits thick, impasto ridges catching light where each bloom turns. Black contour lines cinch the crossing stems, the table tilts forward in one steep plane, and vermilion holds firm against chalk white over a green ground. A dozen sure strokes finish the still life, the Scottish Colourist method pared to essentials. Above a sideboard in the dining room it earns its keep at breakfast, though a dim hallway or stair landing gains as much from all that red.
