Tulips in a Brown Jar

White tulips lean across a brown stoneware jar, their petals tipped with red in the manner of Samuel Peploe. The arrangement sits low and close, cropped tight against the picture plane. Scottish Colourist still life at its most direct. Peploe builds the blooms in thick, separate strokes, cream and vermilion laid side by side so the petals read as folded paper. The jar carries a deep umber glaze, its shadow pooling onto a pale ground where the table edge tilts forward. Background washes of blue-grey keep the flowers airborne. A kitchen table corner, a breakfast nook, or a small dining room with plain plaster walls would suit it well.
