Tulips and Fruit

Scarlet tulips crowd a dark jug, petals splayed wide, while apples and an orange settle against the table edge in Tulips and Fruit, Samuel Peploe at his most decisive. The white cloth folds into stiff, sculptural ridges, creases loaded with thick impasto. Black contours clamp each apple in place. Cobalt shadows pool beneath the jug while the backdrop burns down to one flat slab of deep blue, the whole still life compressed and built rather than copied. Hung in a dining room or a bright kitchen, it keeps company with linen, ceramics and morning light, a table subject that belongs beside an actual table.
