Tulips and Cups

Tulips crowd the table in Tulips and Cups, a still life by Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe. Petals flare open in full bloom, packed tight against a cluster of ceramic cups. Peploe builds the composition from thick, deliberate strokes: scarlet and rose heads pressed into a deep green mass of foliage, the pale cups catching light on their rims. The background holds firm in muted blue, pushing the flowers forward. Every object is given equal weight, arranged with the studio discipline he learned from Cezanne. Suits a dining room or kitchen where colour can carry the wall on its own.
