Tsagaan-Kure, Inner Mongolia

White tents cluster on a yellow steppe, and above them the sacred peak Tsagaan-Kure rises in pale bone and blue. Nicholas Roerich titled this Inner Mongolia scene after that holy summit, the shimmering spine of the region he crossed. The color is all mineral: bone-white snow against a sky of deep cobalt, ochre foothills scored with shadow, scattered pilgrim shelters hunched low in the foreground. Roerichs tempera surfaces give the mountains a chalky, carved quality, every ridge line drawn firm as an engraving. Distance glows rather than fades. A study or quiet hallway gives such high-altitude stillness its right company, a cold bright window of the great steppe routes.
