Trees near Breccles

Elms crowd the hedgerow, trunks dark and ridged, canopies pressing into a soft English sky. Winston Churchill painted Trees near Breccles in loaded oils, each trunk laid down in a few decisive strokes. Grass in the foreground runs yellow green, scumbled in short horizontal dashes. Light breaks through the leaf cover in pale patches while shadow pools beneath the largest limbs. Brushwork stays loose and loaded, pigment standing off the surface in ridges, ochre boles bent by decades of wind.
