A cluster of slender trunks rises from the tall grass of a meadow, rendered by Edouard Vuillard in his quiet, densely worked manner. The painting keeps its attention low, on the field itself. Dabs of moss green and warm ochre build the ground in short, directional strokes, while the canopy above dissolves into flickers of sage and soft gold. Light filters through in broken patches, and the brushwork stays thick and intimate, closer to tapestry than to landscape convention.
