Trees, Antibes

Tall dark trees hold the foreground of Trees, Antibes, their trunks bent and tangled against the glare of the Cote d Azur. Samuel Peploe paints the Mediterranean south as he found it on the coast near Antibes. Sunlight floods through the canopy in broken patches. The foliage is laid on in thick, blocky strokes of green and olive, while the ground beneath glows with hot ochre and terracotta. Beyond the branches, a strip of sea and pale hillside sits flat and bright under a high sky. A reading nook, a study, or a hallway with white walls: anywhere the deep greens and sunlit ochres can carry the warmth of a French summer afternoon.
