Trees and Shadows

Tall trunks lean across the picture plane, their branches cut in dark olive against a pale sky. Trees and Shadows belongs to the painting hand of Winston Churchill, the hobbyist painter with a statesman eye. Look closely and the brushwork loosens into short, loaded strokes. Slate blue shadow pools beneath the canopy while sap green flickers along the limb edges. The ground carries dabs of raw umber and ochre, each stroke doing the work of leaf and root.
