Tree Against the Sky

One broad-crowned tree fills the scene, trunk planted low, limbs flung wide into open blue. Pyotr Konchalovsky called it Tree against the sky, and the title tells where the weight sits. Paint goes on heavy. The bole climbs in ridged strokes of ochre and raw umber, foliage packed from moss green into deep shadow, the upper field dragged across in long sweeps of cobalt and lead white. Twigs at the margin scratch thin and dark. A study with plain plaster walls, or a stairwell landing under a skylight, gives the crown space to breathe and keeps every branch legible from across the room.
