Treatise on Measurement

Ruled lines, compass arcs and faceted solids crowd the page in the Treatise on Measurement, an Albrecht Durer woodcut lesson in geometry and exact proportion. Black ink sits crisp on cream paper. Crosshatching deepens the shadowed faces of a pyramid and a bell-shaped solid, while small letters label each vertex as if a lesson paused mid-sentence. An artist leans toward a string grid, one eye shut, plotting a lute in true perspective.
