Treasure of Snows (Kangchenjunga)

Kangchenjunga fills the frame, a white massif shouldering into cold high air. Nicholas Roerich named it Treasure of Snows, and the title reads as plain fact once you see how much white he has layered over the dark foothills below. Look closely and the snow is never one flat white. Pale blues shadow the glacier faces, lilac grays settle into the couloirs, and a thin edge of light catches the summit ridgeline while the lower slopes stay in dusk. The foreground hills sit nearly black, so the mountain appears lit from within. Tempera gives the surface that dry, matte chalkiness Roerich favored. It suits a study or a quiet reading room, somewhere a long view can be lived with daily.
