Trans-Himalayas

Blue peaks of the trans-himalayas rise in hard, clean edges, one snowfield behind another, painted by Nicholas Roerich. Trans-Himalayas reads as a ladder of mountains climbing out of cold air toward a pale sky. The color is almost all cobalt and ultramarine, laid in flat tempera planes that leave the higher ridges glowing where white pigment sits thick on the surface. A foreground of bare sloping ground in muted violet and grey anchors the composition, and the middle distance dissolves into successively lighter blues, each range cooler than the last. Nothing interrupts the verticals of the summits except thin drifts of cloud caught at their flanks. Suited to a study or a quiet reading room where mountain silence belongs.
