Town

A town rises in stepped blocks on a sloping ridge, rooftops clustered tight as if sheltering from the wind. Nicholas Roerich sets the settlement low in the composition and lets the land do the talking. Earthen walls glow in ochre and umber against a sky of deepening blue. Thin smoke threads upward from a chimney or two, and the paths between houses are sketched in quick, dry strokes of the brush. Beyond the last rooftop, open country rolls toward a horizon he keeps deliberately simple, one pale band of color dividing land from sky. Settled and grounded in mood, Town belongs in a study or hallway, anywhere that rewards a long, quiet look.
