Totem Walk at Sitka

Tall carved poles rise through the trees at Sitka, painted faces staring out from the forest dark. Emily Carr gives them the full weight of her brush. Totem Walk at Sitka puts the viewer on the path itself, walking beneath them. The carving dominates: deep carved lines in weathered wood, ochre and charcoal pigment still clinging to beak, fin and eye. Moss greens and wet browns crowd the undergrowth, while a thin strip of northern sky breaks through the canopy in cold blue-white. Her brushwork is blunt and loaded, dragged across the surface the way rain drags down bark. Hang it where the light is low and the walls are plain, in a study or entryway that can hold something dark and upright.
