Torso of a Young Man I

A bare torso turns on its axis, chest rounded, hips pared away. Torso of a Young Man I by Constantin Brâncuși reduces the male body to two gleaming volumes and one sweeping arm. Polished bronze takes a honeyed sheen where light crosses the chest and goes dark in the hollow under the ribs. One arm curls backward and closes into a loop against the hip, an echo of ancient marble torsos stripped of every incidental detail. The surface carries no tool marks, only light. A study, an entryway, or a quiet reading nook gives the smooth bronze room to breathe, its curves answering daylight as the hours change.
