Tomb

The domed tomb rises half in shade behind a courtyard wall, Sevket Dag setting its slate-grey cupola against honey-colored masonry and the dark spires of cypress. Ochre ashlar blocks, an arched doorway with a studded wooden door, and low gravestones crowned with carved turbans anchor the foreground. Overhead the dome wears dull lead, patched and weathered, the unmistakable profile of an Ottoman mausoleum. Loose brushwork gives the stone its sunlit grain. At home in a study or reading nook, where deep greens and warm light carry the stillness of an old garden enclosure into the room.
