Toghrak-dong

A lone watchtower holds the horizon in Toghrak-dong, a Nicholas Roerich work drawn from Central Asia. The structure rises bare and ancient from flat earth, small against an immense painted sky. The palette is earth at war with light: burnt umber slopes, a band of ochre along the ridge, and cold blue pressing down from above. Roerich builds the land in broad tempera planes, each layer of rock given its own weight, while the tower itself is rendered in tight, dark strokes that make it feel carved rather than painted. Hang it in a study or a north-facing hallway where the cool tones carry.
