Tibetian Camp. Keilang

Smoke lifts from a Tibetan camp pitched on the stony shelf of Keilang, the subject Nicholas Roerich sets down in tempera with high-altitude clarity. Dark tents, white peaks, thin air. Black yak-hair tents sit low against the slope, covers stitched in overlapping panels. Mules stand tethered near a cook fire; a figure in sheepskin bends over the flame. Beyond, the snowline climbs into deep ultramarine, the foreground washed in dry ochre and cold shadow. A study with slate-blue walls and dark timber shelves gives the camp room to breathe; hang it where morning light can pick out the chalky grain of the pigment.
