Tibet

Prayer flags thread across the foreground, and beyond them a Tibetan plateau opens toward ranges that Nicholas Roerich built from bands of blue. The painting titled Tibet carries his signature atmosphere of high altitude and long silence. Ochre earth and pale stone terraces anchor the foreground, while ridgeline after ridgeline recedes into ultramarine and a cold, thin sky. Roerich layered tempera-like planes of color so the mountains read almost as cut stone, hard-edged yet luminous, with small white habitations clinging to the slopes. It belongs in a study or hallway where morning light can reach it, a quiet window onto the Himalayas.
