Tibet

Tibetans cross a high plateau under a sky that carries most of the weight. Nicholas Roerich titled the work simply Tibet, and the plainness suits it: land, figures, and distance compressed into one cold breath of air. Riders move small across the middle ground, dwarfed by ridgelines built from broad planes of cobalt and slate. Snow sits as unbroken whites against deep ultramarine shadow. Farther back, a monastery or fortification clings to the slope, its flat roofs and pale walls reduced to a few decisive strokes. Tempera gives the surface a matte, chalky body, so the mountains read almost like carved stone. A study or hallway with natural light rewards this kind of quiet, elevated landscape.
