Tibet. Monastery in the Mountains (Rakaposhi)

A white monastery clings to a dark shoulder of the Rakaposhi massif, its flat roofs and cubic walls the only sign of human presence. Nicholas Roerich titled the scene simply: Tibet. Monastery in the mountains. Roerich builds the mountain from broad slabs of cold violet and slate blue, the snowline running in one unbroken sweep of near-white tempera. The monastery itself is small, almost incidental, painted in quick cream strokes with a dark window dot and a prayer flag mast beside it. Air at that altitude reads as pure pigment, thin and hard. A study wall, a hallway beneath a stair, or any quiet corner that calls for altitude and silence.
