Tiberias

Tiberias lies along the water, a low town of pale walls and flat roofs gathered at the shore. George Washington Lambert sets the settlement against a wide sweep of sea and hill. Light falls hard across the scene. The water carries streaks of blue and slate, broken by pale glints where the sun catches the surface. Buildings in cream and dusty rose cluster near the shoreline, their shadows short and definite. Behind them the hills step upward in dry olive and brown tones, thinly brushed, almost scrubbed into the ground. Boats sit small against the jetty, dark accents in the bright middle distance. Hung in a study or a stairwell, it reads as a window onto the eastern Mediterranean, cool and open in a dimmer room.
