Three Jewels

Three peaks rise in a single sweep of deep blue, their summits catching a last cold light above the snowline. That is the whole subject of Three Jewels by Nicholas Roerich, and it is enough. Beneath the ridgelines, the terrain reads in layered planes: violet shadow at the base, pale glacier fields mid-slope, and thin ribbons of ochre where rock breaks through the ice. The sky behind holds that saturated cobalt Roerich mixed again and again in the Himalayas, flat and luminous, pressing the mountains forward like carved stone. Nothing moves in the composition except the eye, which climbs. A quiet reading room, a hallway with northern light, a study shelf lined with travel books. Anywhere stillness is welcome.
