Thoughts

A human profile drifts across the upper sky, its brow and cheek dissolving into slow cloud banks over a darkened plain. That is the whole theater of Thoughts by Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis. The pigment sits in thin veils, charcoal and slate washed with violet, so the face reads as weather rather than flesh. Beneath it a pale band of light marks the horizon, and small dark trees or spires hold the lower edge. Nothing is hard-edged; every contour blurs. A study at dusk suits it well, or a quiet hallway where lamplight finds the cool greys and the face in the clouds keeps its counsel.
