The zoo at Brussels

A menagerie unfolds on the page: lions pacing behind low barriers, monkeys perched on timber rails, visitors craning between cages. Albrecht Durer drew the zoo at Brussels with a traveler hunger for every creature in one place. Fine pen lines and delicate crosshatching build each animal body, fur ruffled in short strokes, beaks and claws sharpened to points. Shadows pool under arches and fencing in layered hatching, while blank paper around the enclosures keeps the composition airy and open. The crowd sketches in quick profiles, hats and shoulders suggested in a few marks each.
