The Yellow Jug

A yellow jug holds the centre of this Samuel Peploe still life, its glazed body catching light along one curved flank while the rest stays in cool shadow. Peploe builds the composition from strong blocks of colour: the jug sits against a muted ground, flanked by dark fruit and a pale cloth folded at the table edge. Brushwork is deliberate and close, each stroke loaded, the yellows pushed toward ochre where the glaze turns. Kitchen tables and breakfast rooms suit it well, anywhere morning light moves slowly across a surface.
