The Wild River

Water takes the whole picture. In The Wild River, J. E. H. MacDonald lets a northern current tear through rock, white foam breaking against dark stone banks as the water races toward the viewer. MacDonald worked the surface with thick, restless strokes, steel blues and cold greens dragged over ochre shallows. Gnarled evergreens lean at the banks, roots gripping granite, while the sky above burns a hard northern white. Every brushline follows the current, so the water seems to move even at rest. A reading room, stairwell, or lake-country porch is the right home for this surge of Canadian wilderness.
