The White Sea

Cold northern water stretches to a pale horizon in Valentin Serov's The White Sea. Gray swells roll under a low sky, and the light barely separates sea from cloud. Serov builds the scene from silver, slate blue, and bone white, each wave traced with quick brushwork. Distant cliffs sit as a thin dark band, almost swallowed by mist. Nothing decorative softens the view; the paint itself carries the chill of salt air. A study or seaside reading room gives this seascape the quiet northern wall it deserves.
