The Violet Wave

A violet wave curls across the sea in this work by Georges Lacombe, the crest breaking into lilac and plum against a darkening sky. The swell dominates the picture plane, its curve rendered in layered strokes of purple, mauve, and deep indigo that build volume without softening the force of the water. Foam whitens where the wave turns, catching light before the trough falls into shadow beneath it. In the distance, a low horizon holds the composition steady, the sky carrying traces of rose where day is closing. The nabi-influenced palette gives the water a sculptural weight, as if carved rather than painted.
