The Village of Vosges

Slate roofs crowd down a Vosges hillside in Albert Marquet's The Village of Vosges, a cluster of houses rendered in quiet, closely valued color. Marquet, the great quietist of Fauvism, kept his palette restrained here. Greys and blue-greens dominate the rooftops, each slope tipped with a different shade of the same overcast light. A pale road snakes upward between garden walls, and bare trees thread through the composition, their branches drawn in thin dark strokes against the soft sky. The paint sits flat and calm, almost watery in its transparency. Suited to a reading nook or hallway where its hushed tones reward a slow look.
