The Valley of the Seine

Meadows fall open toward the water in The Valley of the Seine, where Guy Rose reads the river country through a soft impressionist haze of violet and green. Poplars stand in loose rows along the far bluffs, their foliage dabs of sage against a sky washed in pearl. Broken brushwork pulls the current into flecks of lilac and cream. Low sunlight warms the near bank, and thin oil color keeps everything luminous, wet into wet. A sunroom or reading nook with linen and pale wood gives the picture calm company; a study with dark shelves makes its light do more work.
