The Typhoon

Waves rear against a blackened sky as wind flattens everything before it, the scene Galileo Chini named The Typhoon and conjured as a living force rather than weather. Indigo water curls into scroll-shaped crests, foam tears loose in pale green, and a dark storm mass lowers overhead like a wing. Small human figures brace at the waterline, dwarfed. The sweeping ornamental line comes straight out of Italian Liberty style, the decorative current Chini helped define. A stairwell or study with shifting daylight suits the storm; by evening those deep blues deepen further, and the room goes quiet under them.
