The two walnut trees

Two walnut trees rise side by side, their crowns pressed close like old acquaintances. Carlo Fornara gives the pair a whole canvas to themselves. The bark reads in long vertical strokes of grey and umber, ridged where the trunks twist. Foliage breaks into olive, ochre and deep green, the canopy thickening overhead so that light falls in scattered coins across the ground. Grass at the roots carries cool violet shadow, a mountain-valley palette. Set it in a stairwell, a study, or a reading nook facing north light.
