The Two Sisters

Two sisters sit close together in a domestic interior, their figures absorbed into a patterned room of wallpaper, fabric and furniture. Vuillard builds the scene from small touches of paint, mauve and ochre and deep rose, so that faces and surroundings share the same woven surface. The nearer sister leans forward, hands folded, while the other rests in a patterned armchair, both framed by dense interior ornament. Suited to a reading nook, a dressing room or any corner where quiet intimacy belongs.
