The Tree

A gnarled trunk climbs the picture plane, limbs twisting like flexed arms, each branch ringed in heavy black contour. Suzanne Valadon painted The Tree with blunt, muscular candor, foliage pressed into deep green masses. Oil color sits thick: viridian and sap green over warm ochre, bark built from umber and slate grey in short angled strokes. A garden wall runs pale behind the crown, and heavy black outlines carry the drawing while color carries the weight. Set in a study or reading nook, it brings the stubborn vitality of a walled garden indoors, rooted and reaching at once, green shadow against plaster.
