The Tree

A gnarled tree rises through the middle distance, its canopy breaking into loose dabs of leaf-green and gold. Kimon Loghi painted it in the impressionist manner, letting light do the work of line. Look closely and the trunk dissolves into quick, loaded brushwork, ochre shadow against a sky washed in pale blue. The ground beneath scatters into violet and warm umber, the foliage built from short strokes that flicker where sun passes through. Nothing is outlined; every edge is a negotiation between pigment and air. It belongs in a study or reading nook, anywhere that rewards a slower, second look.
