Rime weighs down every branch of one bare giant in The tree in frost, a snowbound landscape by Pyotr Konchalovsky, the Russian painter who built forms in heavy impasto. Hoarfrost builds in thick ridges of white along every limb, glinting where pale sun strikes. Bark burns through in warm umber patches. Beneath, snow lies in slabs of lilac and ice blue, shadowed birch trunks stepping back toward a fence line and a milky sky. A study with a north window suits it, or an entryway where guests shake off their boots. Cold kept indoors, brushstroke by brushstroke.
