The Tops of the Birches

Crowns of birch fill the frame from above, trunks sliding out of sight as the gaze climbs into leaf. Pyotr Konchalovsky named the picture The tops of the birches and painted it from that vantage, looking straight up. Chalk white bark carries its black chevrons and grey slashes up the visible stems. Above them small leaves flicker in sap green, olive and gold, laid on in loaded strokes of broken color. Pale sky shows through the gaps, cool blue washing behind every cluster. Set in a stairwell or a cool study, the upward view behaves like a high window, lifting the eye off furniture and toward open sky.
