The Tolbooth, Kirkcudbright

A grey stone tower rises above the rooftops of Kirkcudbright, its clock face small against the sky. The Tolbooth, Kirkcudbright shows Samuel Peploe treating a Scottish town scene with the colourist eye he brought to everything he touched. Peploe builds the steeple in cool greys and slate blues, then lets warm ochre and soft reds take over along the street below, where gables, chimneys and huddled facades jostle for light. The brushwork stays brisk and structural, sky pushed onto the canvas in broad confident strokes so the tower reads almost carved against it. A painting like this suits a hallway or a home office, anywhere a view of a Scottish harbour town can carry a whole wall on its own.
