The Tangled Garden

Sunflowers crowd the foreground, their heavy heads bowed over a tangle of beans and nasturtiums. The Tangled Garden by J. E. H. MacDonald is a group of seven at full riot, painted in thick, loaded strokes of cadmium yellow and viridian. MacDonald worked the surface with a palette knife, dragging ochre and sap green across the canvas until the petals and pods have actual weight. Behind the tangle, a dark spruce line rises, broken by the pale vertical of a birch trunk and the muted red of a distant roof. The sky churns in slate blues and whites, brushwork following the wind. A garden given over entirely to growth, no path, no order, just the push of August. It belongs in a study or a sunroom, anywhere with strong light and a view of something growing.
