The Volga burns amber at Nizhny Novgorod in The Sunset on Volga, a landscape by Konstantin Yuon where the great river confluence glows at daybreak of evening gold. Domes and rooftops catch the last low light along the bluff, while barges and flatboats sit dark against water brushed in vermilion, rose, and deepening violet. Yuon layers his oil surface so the sky reads almost molten, its radiance spilling over church silhouettes and the distant meeting of two rivers.
