The Suburbs of Rome

Low rooftops and cypress spires stretch toward Rome in Fujishima Takeji's The Suburbs of Rome, a Japanese painter's view of the Campagna under a wide Italian sky. Warm haze softens the distance where the city's domes sit half dissolved in light. Closer to hand, umbrella pines throw blue shadows across pale walls, dirt tracks curve between low outbuildings, and a pale gold glow settles over the fields. The brushwork is loose and atmospheric, oil paint laid in thin, sun-bleached layers. A quiet study or hallway with linen and stone tones suits it well.
