The Square of Volpedo

Sunlight flattens the piazza of Volpedo into long lanes of pale and dusty colour. Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo built the scene from small divisionist touches, brick and stucco holding their warmth against a wide, bright sky. Look at the ground first. Warm ochres and rose greys break into separate strokes, so the cobbles seem to shimmer where figures cross them. Thin shadows slide from doorways and low arcades. Roofs rise in muted terracotta against a sky washed almost white, and small dark notes of clothing anchor the emptiness. A quiet, luminous study for a living room or hallway, where its soft light rewards long looking.
