The Sorceress

A hooded woman gathers herself into one smooth volume, knees and shoulders dissolved into a single swelling curve. Constantin Brâncuși called her The Sorceress, and the name suits the shape. Plaster gives her surface a chalky, matte quiet. Light slides along the long ridge of the nose, a sharp prow riding out over the folded body, then settles in the hollow beneath the chin. Nothing is detailed; everything is reduced until the hunched silhouette becomes one deliberate, concentrated gesture. Set in a study or reading nook, against plain walls and low shelves, she keeps her hunched, watchful silence over the whole room.
