The Solfege

A singer bends over the notes, one hand lifted mid-phrase, while a second figure listens from the edge of the lamplit room. Pierre Bonnard built The Solfege out of small domestic tension, the moment between practice and song. Vermilion and violet press against each other across the wall, broken by a window of cold blue. The floor tilts upward in ochre, and the figure dissolves into loose strokes of rose and slate where the lamp catches her shoulder. Nothing is outlined twice; edges breathe. It belongs in a music room or a reading nook, somewhere afternoon light moves slowly across the page.
