The Sleep of Brunhilde

A armored maiden lies deep in slumber on a rocky mound, eyes closed, golden hair fanned across stone. This is the sleep of Brunhilde as Arthur Rackham drew it for the Nibelung legend, the warrior turned sleeper after her divine father stripped her godhood away. Rackham built the image from fine pen linework and muted watercolor washes, greys and mossy greens pooling where the rocks darken. Her chainmail and shield lie cast aside, the helmet set down beside her, while gnarled tree roots and small flames curl around the sleeping figure. Every branch and contour carries his unmistakable crosshatching. It belongs in a study or reading nook, somewhere the old sagas and fairy tales still get read aloud after dark.
