About this work

The Ships of the Times of Peter I

Sailing vessels crowd the water at their moorings, tall masts and furled rigging etched in fine line against a pale sky. The Ships of the Times of Peter I shows Eugene Lanceray at his most studious. Every hull is drawn with archival care: gun ports along dark timbers, block-and-tackle worked in close crosshatching, small figures on deck and along the quay. Ink and watercolour tones, sepia over grey, keep the whole flotilla tonally quiet while Lanceray documents each sail. A study, library, or hallway in a naval or historical spirit suits this scene of early Russian seafaring admirably.
